Making Healthy Food Choices

Healthful eating is easy if you take a couple of steps in preparation. You are the gate keeper to what goes into your mouth. If you put sugary, high fat foods in your mouth you’re bound to be overweight and will have joint pain due to carrying excessive weight.
If you put green leafy veggies, salads and lean proteins in your diet you will be light on your feet, have decreased joint pain and increased vitality.
Five Steps to Healthful eating:
1. Eat Breakfast every day
2. Eat more fruits and vegetables
3. Explore new tastes and try new foods (try some FISH)
4. Snack smart on nuts and berries
5. Get Moving: take a walk, sweep the floor, walk the dog (they will thank you)
In my practice my patients try to eat healthy and even express the types of foods that they are eating. However, the problem is that the serving size (even though they are healthy foods) is out of control. It is not our fault either! We are inundated with large portions at restaurants and even Mom’s Sunday dinner. We need to scale back and eat smaller portions throughout the day. Below is an easy to understand portion control:
|
3 oz of meat |
Deck of cards |
|
1 oz of meat |
Matchbook |
|
1 cup of fruit/yogurt |
Baseball |
|
½ cup chopped veggies |
3 ice cubes |
|
1 cup potatoes, rice, pasta |
Tennis ball |
|
1 cup chopped fresh leafy greens |
4 lettuce leaves |
|
2 tablespoons peanut butter |
Golf ball |
|
1 oz of cheese |
Tube of lipstick/four dice |
Try to stick to a smaller portion size and keep yourself active. Remember with age comes wisdom not aches & pains. Your numeric age does not have to be your physiological age. Eat right, exercise, and maintain a confident, relaxed attitude and your physiological age may be younger than you think!!
